Micranthes aprica, known as Sierra saxifrage, is a perennial herb in the Saxifragaceae family native to high mountain regions in California, Nevada, and Oregon. It thrives in alpine climates, growing in meadows and near snowmelt streams. The plant forms a basal rosette of toothed, gray-green leaves and occasionally produces a short inflorescence with white flowers.
Description
Micranthes aprica is a flowering plant species in the Saxifragaceae family, native to the Sierra Nevada, southern Cascade Range, and adjacent areas in California, Nevada, and Oregon. It is adapted to alpine environments, often found in meadows and near snowmelt streams. The plant remains dormant for much of the year to conserve water and rarely flowers. When it does, it produces a small inflorescence with a cluster of white flowers, each having five sepals, five small petals, and a central cluster of stamens. The species was first described in 1905.
