The plant is found in rocky and upland habitats. Common names for this species include Sheep's Bit, blue bonnets, blue buttons, blue daisy, and iron flower. It is occasionally referred to as Sheep's Bit Scabious or Sheep Scabious, but it is not related to the Scabiosa genus. The species was first described in 1753.
