Sesamum alatum, known as winged-seed sesame, is a species in the Pedaliaceae family. It is native to a wide range from Western Sahara to Egypt and extends south to KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The species was first described in 1827 by Thonn.

Description

Sesamum alatum is a flowering plant species in the genus Sesamum, which also includes the well-known sesame. It is distinguished by its winged seeds. The species is found across several African countries, including Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Mali, Mauritania, Mozambique, Namibia, and India. Its distribution also includes the Caprivi Strip and parts of Egypt. The plant is part of the Pedaliaceae family and shares characteristics with other members of the Sesamum genus.
