Picea omorika, the Serbian Spruce, is a coniferous tree native to the Drina River valley in western Serbia and eastern Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is found in a limited area of about 60 hectares at elevations between 800 and 1,600 meters. The species was first identified near the Serbian village of Zaovine on Mount Tara in 1875 by the botanist Josif Pančić, who named it using the Serbian term for the tree.

Description

Picea omorika belongs to the Pinaceae family and is known by the common name Serbian Spruce. It is endemic to the Drina River valley, with a narrow distribution in the Balkans. The species was first described in 1877 by Purk. It is found in several European countries, including Belgium, France, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom, among others. Its natural range is restricted to a small area in Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, and it has been introduced to other regions globally.
