Canavalia gladiata (Jacq.) DC., known as scimitar-bean, is a species in the Fabaceae family. It is used as a vegetable in central and south central India and in parts of Africa and Asia. The unripe pods are consumed, though the plant is not commercially farmed.

Description

Canavalia gladiata, also called the scimitar-bean, is a domesticated legume in the Fabaceae family. It is grown and consumed as a vegetable in central and south central India. The unripe pods are also used as food in various regions of Africa and Asia. It is not cultivated on a commercial scale. The species is native to and found in regions including Brazil, South Carolina, Cuba, India, the Philippines, and parts of China, as well as in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and other tropical areas. It was first described in 1825.
