Scilla nana, a bulbous perennial flowering plant, is endemic to Crete. It blooms in early spring with lilac-blue flowers and enters dormancy after flowering. It is part of a group of Scilla species previously classified under the genus Chionodoxa and is sometimes considered part of Scilla sect. Chionodoxa. It has occasionally been confused with Scilla cretica.
Description
Scilla nana (Schult. & Schult.f.) Speta is a member of the Asparagaceae family and is native to Kriti (Crete). It is a small, bulbous perennial that produces lilac-blue flowers in early spring. Following the flowering period, the plant becomes dormant until the next growing season. This species was once grouped with others in the now-defunct genus Chionodoxa and is sometimes placed in Scilla sect. Chionodoxa. Its taxonomic distinction from Scilla cretica has not always been clear. The species was formally described in 1971.
