Frangula azorica is a tall semi-deciduous shrub or small tree in the family Rhamnaceae. It is endemic to the Azores, Portugal. Fossil evidence suggests it was also native to Madeira but became extinct there. The species is currently threatened by habitat loss.

Description

Frangula azorica, known as Sanguinho, is a shrub or small tree found in the Azores, including islands such as Faial, Flores, Pico, São Jorge, São Miguel, and Terceira. It was first described in 1949 by Grubov. The plant is part of the Rhamnaceae family, commonly known as the buckthorn family. Fossil records indicate that it was once native to Madeira but is now extinct there. Habitat loss poses a significant threat to the survival of this species.
