Saccolabiopsis microphyton is distributed across the Bismarck Archipelago and the island of New Guinea. The species was formally published in 1935 by the botanist J.J. Smith, who revised the original description by Schltr. Its name reflects its small leaf size, as indicated by the specific epithet 'microphyton.'
