Rustwort

Nowellia curvifolia is a small liverwort with distinctive two-rowed leaves, each split into two lobes. The lower lobe functions as a water-holding structure. It is found on rotting logs in forest environments and is notable for its seasonal color variation, ranging from green to reddish-purple. The species reproduces sexually through spores in reddish-brown capsules and asexually via gemmae. It is commonly found in montane spruce-fir forests, where it forms dense mats and is associated with the slime mould Barbeyella minutissima. Its distribution includes regions such as Québec, Labrador, the Azores, parts of South America, and several European countries.
