Axyris amaranthoides, known as Russian pigweed, is a flowering plant in the Chenopodiaceae family. It is native to Europe and Asia and has been introduced to North America, where it is now found in several Canadian provinces and the United States. The species was first recorded in Manitoba in 1886 and has since expanded its range.
Description
Axyris amaranthoides is a member of the Chenopodiaceae family and is commonly referred to as Russian pigweed. It is native to regions including Russia, Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Great Britain, Denmark, and Kyrgyzstan. The plant was introduced to Manitoba in 1886 and has since spread to other Canadian provinces such as Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Northwest Territories, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, and Saskatchewan. It is also present in the United States. The species was first described by Linnaeus in 1753.
