Chlorophytum comosum (Thunb.) Jacques, known as Ribbon Plant, is a perennial flowering plant in the Asparagaceae family. Native to tropical and southern Africa, it is now naturalized in regions including Western Australia, Bangladesh, and parts of Europe and the Americas. The plant is commonly grown as a houseplant due to its resilience, though it may show sensitivity to fluoride in tap water, causing leaf tip damage. Variegated forms are particularly favored.

Description

Chlorophytum comosum is an evergreen perennial with a spider-like appearance, also referred to as spider plant, spider ivy, airplane plant, and hen and chicks. It is widely cultivated for its ornamental value and ease of care. The plant is native to tropical and southern Africa and has been introduced to various regions, including the Açores, Madeira, parts of Europe, and Australia. It is known for producing offsets, which contribute to its common name 'hen and chicks.' While generally hardy, it may exhibit tip damage from fluoride in water. The species was first described in 1862.
