The species was formally described in 1836 by the botanist Pfeiff. It is part of a group of epiphytic or lithophytic cacti that are often found in tropical and subtropical regions. Rhipsalis species are known for their slender, often pendulous stems and are commonly cultivated as ornamental plants.
