It is distributed across various locations including Langkawi, the Andaman Islands, Bismarck Archipelago, Cambodia, Caroline Islands, China Southeast, Fiji, Gilbert Islands, Hainan, Java, Lesser Sunda Islands, Malaya, Maluku, Marianas, Nansei-shoto, New Caledonia, and New Guinea. The species was first described in 1854 by Griff. The name stylosa is derived from the Latin word for 'stylus form,' describing the shape of its flowers.
