Petrea volubilis L., a member of the Verbenaceae family, is an evergreen flowering vine native to tropical America. It is known by common names such as purple eggplant, queen's wreath, and sandpaper vine. The species is widely distributed across regions including Brazil, Colombia, India, and parts of the United States. First published in 1753, it is recognized for its violet flowers and is cultivated for ornamental purposes.

Description

Petrea volubilis is a climbing vine that thrives in tropical climates and is found in various protected areas such as the Parque Nacional Natural Yaigojé Apaporis and the Jardín Botánico de Bogotá. Its range extends from South America through Central America and into parts of the Caribbean and Africa. The plant is distinguished by its showy violet flowers and is commonly used in horticulture for its ornamental value. The species has been the subject of taxonomic discussion, with Moldenke's 1938 selection of a type specimen taking priority over later interpretations.
