Lamium purpureum L., commonly known as purple archangel, is an annual herbaceous flowering plant in the Lamiaceae family. Native to Eurasia, it has been introduced to North America and is now widely distributed across regions including Greenland, Newfoundland, British Columbia, and parts of Europe, as well as in FI, NO, SE, TW, RU, and CL. First published in 1753, it belongs to the genus Lamium.
Description
Lamium purpureum is a member of the mint family (Lamiaceae) and is recognized by its common names such as red dead-nettle and purple dead-nettle. It is an annual plant that has expanded beyond its native Eurasian range to become naturalized in North America. Historical taxonomic discussions note that it was once considered the generitype of the genus Lamium under the American Code, though this has been revised in favor of Lamium album under the Vienna Code.
