Ptychomnion aciculare is a moss species native to Australia, New Zealand, New Caledonia, Samoa, the Juan Fernandez Islands, and Chile. It is often identified by its resemblance to a pipe-cleaner, particularly when partially dried. The species occurs at altitudes from sea level to sub-alpine regions (up to 1200m).
