Its range includes Assam, Bangladesh, Borneo, Cambodia, Caroline Is., Hainan, India, Jawa, Laos, Malaya, Myanmar, Nepal, New Guinea, Philippines, Solomon Is., Sulawesi, Sumatera, Thailand, and Vietnam. The plant was first scientifically described in 1849 by the author Moq.
