Protea afra is a variable species native to Africa, ranging from South Africa to Kenya. It grows in subtropical open or wooded grasslands, typically on rocky ridges. The plant can be a small tree or shrub with leathery, hairless leaves. Its flower heads are solitary or in clusters of 3 or 4, with pale red, pink, or cream involucral bracts. The fruit is a densely hairy nut.

Description

Protea afra, described by Meisn. in 1856, belongs to the family Proteaceae. It is found in a range of habitats across Africa, from South Africa up to Kenya. The species is characterized by its variability, with several recognized subspecies. It typically inhabits subtropical grasslands and rocky ridges.
