Pom-Pom Tree
Dais cotinifolia L.

Dais cotinifolia, known as the Pom-Pom Tree, is a small tree native to Southern Africa and part of the Thymelaeaceae family. It is found in regions such as the Garden Route National Park, Cape Provinces, KwaZulu-Natal, and as far as Lesotho, Malawi, and Zimbabwe. The species was first described in 1762 by Linnaeus. It is characterized by its pink, sweet-scented, globular flowerheads that bloom in summer.
Description
Dais cotinifolia is distributed across several regions in Southern Africa, including the Garden Route National Park, Free State, Northern Provinces, Swaziland, Tanzania, and Lesotho. It is also found in Malawi and Zimbabwe. The plant produces clusters of pink, globular flowers that are approximately 8 cm in diameter and emit a sweet scent. The species was described by Linnaeus in 1762, with the original material later designated as the type by Peterson. There has been discussion regarding the holotype, with some suggesting an illustration by Meerburg could serve as a neotype under Art. 9.8, but the original material remains the designated type.
