This species is distributed across several countries in Central and South America, specifically in the regions of Magdalena, Colombia, as well as in Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico (Central, Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, Southwest), Nicaragua, Panamá, and Venezuela. The species was formally published in 1850 by the botanist Kunze.
