Pogonatum urnigerum is a moss species in the Polytrichaceae family, commonly known as pogonatum moss or urn haircap. It is characterized by a blue-tinged green color and a wine-red stem. The moss grows vertically and is anchored by rhizoids. It is acrocarpous, with the archegonium at the top of each female gametophyte shoot, which develops an erect sporophyte. The species is named for its wide-mouthed capsule, derived from Latin 'urna' (urn) and 'gerere' (to bear).
Description
Pogonatum urnigerum is found in gravelly banks and similar habitats. Its distribution includes regions such as Labrador, Québec, Faial Island, São Miguel Island, Madeira Island, the United Kingdom, Flanders, Southeastern Europe, Vermont in the U.S., Norway, Denmark, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, Belgium, and the Flemish and Walloon Regions. The species was first described in 1805. It is distinguished by its coloration and growth form, with a wide-mouthed capsule that inspired its name. The moss is anchored by rhizoids and is acrocarpous, with sporophytes developing from the top of female gametophyte shoots.
