Ananas comosus (L.) Merr., known as pineapple, is a tropical plant in the Bromeliaceae family. It is the most economically significant species in its family. The plant is native to South America and has been widely cultivated in tropical regions around the world, including Brazil, India, and various islands in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. The species was first described by Linnaeus in 1753, though the type specimen is not preserved in the Clifford herbarium. The name was later published by Merr in 1917.

Description

Ananas comosus is a member of the Bromeliaceae family and is cultivated for its edible fruit. It is native to South America and has been introduced to tropical regions globally, including countries such as Brazil, India, and islands like Curieuse and Praslin. The species was first described by Linnaeus in 1753, with the type material referenced in a botanical illustration by Commelin. However, no physical specimens from the original description are preserved in the Clifford herbarium. The current scientific name was published by Merr in 1917. Despite its economic importance, the formal typification of the species remains unresolved in botanical literature.
