Pilularia globulifera, known as pillwort, is a fern species in the family Marsileaceae. It is native to western Europe and is typically found in wetland habitats such as the edges of lakes, ponds, ditches, and marshes, often growing on wet clay or clay-sand soil and occasionally in shallow water.

Description

Pilularia globulifera (L.) is a fern species belonging to the Marsileaceae family. It is distributed across regions including Portugal, Flanders, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Ireland, and Italy. The plant is commonly found in wetland environments, such as the margins of lakes, ponds, ditches, and marshes, where it thrives on wet clay or clay-sand substrates. It can tolerate water depths of up to 30 cm. The species was first described in 1753. Botanical discussions regarding its nomenclature have been documented, including references to Jonsell & Jarvis (1994) and earlier work by Bobrov.
