Description

Picris hispanica (Willd.) P.D.Sell is a member of the Asteraceae family, found in Morocco, Spain, Tunisia, Libya, and Algeria. It is a perennial herb with stems 4-20 cm tall, densely covered with a mix of rigid, broad-based hairs and softer hairs. The basal leaves are 25-80 mm long and 10-25 mm wide, oblanceolate, and pinnatisect with linear to narrowly triangular lobes. The cauline leaves are similar but smaller. The plant produces one to two capitula, each with an involucre 13-20 mm long and 10-15 mm wide. The involucre bracts are lanceolate, obtuse, and covered with short wavy hairs and longer rigid hairs along the median line. The outer bracts are about half the length of the inner ones. The achenes are 9-10 mm long, dark brown, slightly curved, weakly transversely muricate, and have a short beak.
