Phytocrene macrophylla is a species in the Icacinaceae family, native to regions including Bangladesh, Borneo, Java, Myanmar, the Philippines, Sulawesi, and Sumatra. Described in 1849, its fruit is elliptical, red when mature, and has a hairy epicarp. The endocarp is oblong, cream-colored, and features pitted and ridged surfaces. It has a thick wall with three distinct cell layers.

Description

The fruit of Phytocrene macrophylla is elliptical, with a symmetrical and elongated apex, and a red color when mature. The epicarp is covered in clusters of yellow-red hairs, and the mesocarp is 330–400 µm thick, becoming thicker in the dry accrescent part. The calyx is not persistent. The endocarp is cream-colored, oblong in lateral view, and lenticular in transverse section, measuring 40–60 mm in length and 13.3–25.0 mm in width. Its surface is pitted and ridged, with pits arranged longitudinally and measuring 0.4–1.0 mm in diameter. The endocarp wall is 550–660 µm thick (excluding pits) and consists of three cell layers. The outermost layer contains 10–16 rows of anticlinally oriented cells, followed by a periclinally oriented layer, and an innermost single cell row.
