Phyllostachys atrovaginata is a cold-hardy running bamboo species native to Southeast China. It is known for its upright, strongly tapered culms and a distinctive fragrant scent, particularly in warm weather or when rubbed. The species is commonly called 'Incense bamboo' due to its aromatic properties. It can grow up to 10 m in height with a culm diameter of 7.0 cm. The specific epithet refers to the dark green and deep red wine-colored culm sheaths. It has previously been classified as Phyllostachys congesta.
Description
Phyllostachys atrovaginata belongs to the Poaceae family and is adapted to subtropical and temperate climates. It can tolerate winter temperatures as low as -23 °C. The species has rhizomes and roots with air canals, similar to water bamboo, allowing it to thrive in wet soil conditions. Its scientific name was first published in 1980 by C.S. Chao and H.Y. Chou.
