Phoebe zhennan is a tall tree species in the Lauraceae family, reaching up to 30 metres in height. Endemic to China, it is found in Guizhou, Hubei, and Sichuan provinces. The species is classified under second-class national protection due to habitat loss. Historically, its wood, known as nanmu, was highly valued and used in the construction of the Forbidden City.

Description

Phoebe zhennan, a member of the Lauraceae family, is a tall tree species native to China. It grows in Guizhou, Hubei, and Sichuan provinces and can reach a height of 30 metres. The tree is named after its Chinese name, 楨楠/桢楠. Due to habitat loss, it is considered threatened and is protected under second-class national status in China. The wood of Phoebe zhennan, referred to as nanmu, was historically significant and used for constructing pillars in the Forbidden City.
