Philadelphus tenuifolius is an evergreen shrub in the Hydrangeaceae family, reaching up to 3 m in height. It is native to regions including Amur, Inner Mongolia, Khabarovsk, Korea, Manchuria, Primorye, and Uzbekistan. The plant has alternate, ovate-oblong leaves, 5–20 cm long, with acuminate tips and obtuse bases. It is dioecious, with staminate and pistillate flowers in panicles. The flowers are small, with yellowish green sepals and petals. The fruit is an elliptic, red samara, 1.5–2 cm long, persisting on branches through winter. It flowers from March to April and fruits in October. It thrives in moist, fertile soils in shaded, lowland to mountainous habitats.

Description

Philadelphus tenuifolius is an evergreen shrub with dichotomously forked branches and glabrous twigs. Leaves are alternate, ovate-oblong, 5–20 cm long, with a lustrous, deep green upper surface and light green underside, sometimes with yellow spots. Margins are obtusely toothed. The plant is dioecious, with staminate flowers 5–10 cm long and pistillate flowers 2–3 cm long in pubescent panicles. Petals are acuminate, 2 mm long, and dark purple. The fruit is an elliptic, red samara, 1.5–2 cm long, remaining on branches during winter. It is found in moist, shaded habitats such as valleys, stream banks, and forested areas. It is distributed in China's southern Zhejiang, Taiwan, and Japan's Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, as well as in Korea and parts of Russia. It prefers rich, moist soils and grows in dense thickets, with relatively rapid growth.
