Physalis virginiana, known as the Virginia groundcherry, is a rhizomatous perennial species in the nightshade family, Solanaceae. It is native to eastern North America and has a distribution that extends as far west as Wyoming. Description

Physalis virginiana (Mill.) is a member of the genus Physalis within the Solanaceae family. It is a rhizomatous perennial herb that is native to regions including Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Saskatchewan, and parts of the United States such as Alabama, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, and Maryland. It is also found in parts of Mexico, including the Gulf, Northeast, and Northwest regions, as well as in Hungary, Italy, Australia, and other global locations. The species was first described in 1768 and is commonly referred to as the Virginia groundcherry or perennial ground-cherry. It thrives in a range of habitats and is distinguished by its perennial growth and deeply buried stem base.
