Carica papaya, known as papaw, is a species in the Caricaceae family. It was first described in 1753 and is one of 21 species in the genus Carica. The plant is native to Mesoamerica and is now cultivated in tropical regions worldwide. The fruit, also called papaya, is widely consumed. In 2024, India was the top producer, contributing 36% of global output.

Description

Carica papaya is a member of the Caricaceae family, a group of flowering plants. It is primarily grown in tropical climates and is cultivated in countries such as Colombia, India, and others. The species was first domesticated in Mesoamerica, in what is now southern Mexico and Central America. The fruit is economically significant and consumed globally. The plant is known by the common names papaya and papaw in English. Its distribution includes regions such as the Cuenca río Amoyá in Colombia, as well as several other locations. The species was first published in 1753 by Carl Linnaeus.
