Prionium serratum (L.f.) Drège is a semiaquatic, rhizomatous flowering plant in the family Thurniaceae. It is the sole species in the genus Prionium and is endemic to South Africa, where it is known as Palmiet. The plant can grow up to 2 m in height and is evergreen. It is distributed in the Cape Provinces and KwaZulu-Natal. Some taxonomists have reclassified Prionium into its own family, Prioniaceae, rather than placing it in Thurniaceae.

Description

Prionium serratum is a robust, rhizomatous plant that grows in wetland habitats. It is native to South Africa and is commonly referred to as Palmiet. The species was published in 1843 and is characterized by its semiaquatic nature and evergreen foliage. It is the only member of the genus Prionium. Taxonomic revisions have led to its placement in a separate family, Prioniaceae, by some researchers, though it is still classified under Thurniaceae in other systems.
