Orchis pallens, commonly known as the pale orchid, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to Europe and parts of southwestern Asia. It is a member of the Orchidaceae family and is characterized by its pale yellow, fragrant flowers and distinctive rhombic labellum. The species is widely distributed across Europe and is known for its early spring blooming period.

Description

Orchis pallens is a terrestrial orchid with subglobose or ovoid tubers, often stipitate. The plant grows to a height of 15 to 35 cm, with an erect stem that bears leaves in the lower half and sheaths above. The leaves are oblong or oblong-obovate, narrowing gradually at the base. The inflorescence is a dense spike, with lanceolate bracts that are 1-veined and either equal in length to or longer than the ovary. The flowers are pale yellow and emit a scent reminiscent of Sambucus nigra (elderberry). The outer perianth segments are 7 to 9 mm long, ovate-oblong, and obtuse, with the two lateral ones deflexed and the median one erect. The inner perianth segments are obliquely oblong. The labellum is suborbicular-rhombic, 6 to 8 mm in size, and 3-lobed, with the lateral lobes being orbicular and obtuse, and the middle lobe almost square, truncate, or emarginate. The spur is cylindrical, patent, and slightly shorter than the ovary. The plant has a diploid chromosome count of 2n = 40.

Habitat

Orchis pallens is typically found in a variety of habitats, including woodlands, meadows, and grassy slopes. It prefers well-drained soils and is often associated with calcareous or neutral substrates. The species is adapted to temperate climates and is commonly found in regions with mild winters and moderate rainfall.

Cultivation

Orchis pallens can be cultivated in gardens with appropriate conditions. It requires partial shade to full sun and well-drained, humus-rich soil. The plant benefits from a cool, moist growing environment and should be protected from excessive summer heat. Propagation can be achieved through division of the tubers or by sowing seeds in a cold frame. Care should be taken to mimic natural conditions, as orchids can be sensitive to changes in moisture and temperature.

Uses

Orchis pallens is primarily valued for its ornamental use in gardens and natural landscapes. It is not commonly used in horticulture or agriculture, but it plays a role in supporting pollinators such as bees and butterflies. The plant is also of interest to botanists and conservationists due to its ecological significance and the need to preserve orchid habitats.
