It grows up to 25–50 cm in height and is native to the islands of Crete, Karpathos, and Rhodes. The plant has a pinkish-purple stem up to 30 cm long and glaucous dissected leaves. It blooms in mid-spring.

Paeonia clusii, described by Stern in 1940, belongs to the Paeoniaceae family. This herbaceous peony is characterized by its low growth, reaching 25–50 cm in height.
