Grimmia orbicularis Bruch ex Wilson

Grimmia orbicularis is a species of moss in the family Grimmiaceae, first described in 1844. It is found in regions including Madeira Island, Flanders, Norway, and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. The species is characterized by its compact growth form and distinct leaf morphology, with leaves broadest at mid-leaf and recurved margins. It is monoicous, with male and female structures present on the same plant. The leaves are appressed to the stem when dry and become erecto-patent when wet. The sporophyte has peristome teeth that are divided into two to four parts in the upper half, sometimes interconnected by anastomosis.
Description
Grimmia orbicularis is a moss species with a cushion-forming growth habit, densely attached to the substrate. The gametophyte is monoicous, with male perigonia located on short stalks below the perichaetium and female perichaetial leaves that are concave and sheathing. The leaves are 1.0–1.5 mm long, ovate to lanceolate in shape, with a concave base and keeled lamina. The margins are recurved on both sides at mid-leaf and unistratose except at the apex. The basal paracostal cells are elongate-rectangular with nodulose walls. The sporophyte features peristome teeth divided into two to four parts in the upper half, sometimes anastomosed. The species is distinguishable by its leaf morphology and sporophyte structure.
