The plant was first described in 1753, with the specific epithet originally spelled 'latifolio' in the protologue.

Description

Elaeagnus latifolia is a member of the genus Elaeagnus and is commonly referred to as bastard oleaster or soh-shang. It is distributed across several countries in South and Southeast Asia. The species is part of the Elaeagnaceae family, which is known as the silverberry or oleaster family. Its original spelling in the protologue was 'latifolio,' but it is now standardized as 'latifolia.'
