It is distributed across various countries including Belgium, the Flemish and Walloon Regions, Albania, Algeria, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Switzerland, and Yugoslavia. The species was first formally described by Pollich in 1776. It belongs to the genus Oenanthe, which includes several other herbaceous plants found in similar regions.
