The species is typically found in wooded savannah, open forest, gallery forest, and thicket. It was first described in 1868. In Angola, it has been recorded in Quiçama National Park, with specimens collected by F. Monteiro. The conservation status of Ochna afzelii is Least Concern (LC) according to the IUCN Red List (2017).
