Carya myristiciformis (F.Michx.) Nutt. ex Elliott, known as nutmeg hickory, is a tree in the Juglandaceae family. It is native to the Southern United States and northern Mexico, typically found in moist, rich soils of bottom lands and stream banks. It is sometimes referred to as swamp hickory or bitter water hickory.

Description

Carya myristiciformis is a member of the walnut family (Juglandaceae) and is commonly called nutmeg hickory. It is found in small populations across the Southern U.S. and northern Mexico, growing in moist, fertile soils along stream banks and in bottom lands. The growth rate of this species is not well documented. The wood is often sold mixed with other hickory species, and the oil-rich nuts serve as a food source for wildlife.
