Nigella ciliaris, known as pinwheel nigella or ciliate love-in-a-mist, is a flowering plant in the family Ranunculaceae. It is native to Cyprus and the Levant, where it grows as an annual in garrigue habitats. The plant can reach 25 to 35 cm in height and is sometimes cultivated for its yellow, pinwheel-like flowers and distinctive seedheads.

Description

Nigella ciliaris is a therophytic annual species in the genus Nigella, part of the buttercup family, Ranunculaceae. It is found in Cyprus and the Levant, including Lebanon-Syria and Palestine. The plant is characterized by its yellow flowers and long-lasting seedheads, which contribute to its occasional use in cultivation. First described in 1817, it is adapted to dry, rocky environments typical of the garrigue. Its scientific name is Nigella ciliaris DC.
