The species is part of the genus Nemesia within the family Scrophulariaceae. The name is associated with Ventenat’s botanical work, though no specimen has been located at G, and the only known specimen in P-JU is designated as the lectotype. The species is known locally in Afrikaans as witleeubekkie.
