Napoleonaea vogelii is an evergreen shrub or low-branching tree reaching up to 15 metres in height, with a dense crown. It is native to Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Cote D'Ivoire. The bark has local uses, including flavouring rice and being chewed with cola nuts as a stimulant.
Description
Napoleonaea vogelii, described by Hook. & Planch. in 1848, belongs to the Lecythidaceae family. It is found in the regions of Base-Guinée, Guinée forestière, Haute-Guinée, and Moyenne-Guinée, as well as in Ghana, Guinea, and Ivory Coast. The species is characterized by its evergreen nature and low-branching growth habit. Locally, the bark is used to add flavour to rice and is also chewed with cola nuts for its stimulant properties.
