It is distributed in Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Texas, and the Mexican Northeast. This species was first described in 1862 by Buckley. Commonly referred to as the Mustang grape, it is a part of the Vitis genus, which includes various grapevine species.
