Description

Murdannia gardneri is a perennial, rhizomatous herb reaching 30.0–150.0 cm in height. It is found in the northeastern, northern, southeastern, and west-central regions of Brazil. The plant grows in terrestrial, paludal, or flooded environments. Its stems are prostrate with erect to ascending apices, unbranched or sparsely branched at the base. Leaves are spirally alternate, with chartaceous, linear-lanceolate laminae. The species is distinguished from similar Murdannia species by the verticillate arrangement of cincinni, subglobose to globose capsules, and 1-seeded locules. It differs from Murdannia burchellii by its robust growth, chartaceous leaves, and glabrous capsules. Murdannia paraguayensis is differentiated by its 1-flowered cincinni, deflexed pedicels, and glandular hairs on the gynoecium and capsules.
