murain grass
Ischaemum rugosum Salisb.

Ischaemum rugosum is a species in the grass family Poaceae, known as murain grass or saramollagrass. It is an annual plant native to tropical and temperate regions of Asia, commonly found in wet habitats like marshes. The plant can grow up to 1 m tall and is characterized by the ridged surface of the lower glume of its sessile spikelet. While historically used as fodder in Asia, it has become a problematic weed in mid-latitude rice paddies in Asia and South America, and is invasive in Madagascar.
Description
Ischaemum rugosum is native to Asia and has a wide distribution, including regions such as the Afrotropical, Australasian, Nearctic, Neotropical, Oriental (Indomalaya), and Palaearctic zones, as well as specific localities like BR, CO, MX, KH, BF, and others. It was first described in 1791 by Salisb. The plant's adaptability and vigorous growth contribute to its invasive potential in regions where it is not native. Its ecological impact includes competition with rice crops, making it a significant agricultural concern in affected areas.
