The species was formally published in 1993 by D.I. Ford, who recognized it based on prior taxonomic contributions by Barnéoud. This species is part of a group of plants adapted to arid or semi-arid environments, as is common in the Montiaceae family. The name Montiopsis is derived from the genus Montia, with the suffix -opsis indicating a resemblance to that genus.
