Monstera subpinnata is a scandent epiphyte native to Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, and Colombia. It can reach heights of up to 12 m and is characterized by its pinnate leaves, which are distinct within the genus. The leaves are 25–40 cm long and 18–30 cm wide, deeply pinnatifid with 3–12 pinnae per side. The plant produces a pale yellow to yellow flowering spadix, 8–12 cm long, and a fruiting spadix that turns yellow or orange at maturity. The species was first described in 1879.

Description

Monstera subpinnata (Schott) Engl. is a member of the Araceae family and is distributed in Amazonas, Guaviare, Vaupés, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. The adult stem is 1.5–2.5 cm thick with 3–8 cm long internodes and a flaky, light brown cuticle. The petiole is 25–38 cm long, with a deciduous sheath. The lamina is deeply pinnatifid, with primary lateral veins numbering 8–14 and secondary veins parallel to the primary. The peduncle is 5–10 mm thick and 8–12 cm long. The spathe is white, cream, or yellowish-pink, and the fruiting spadix is 12–17 cm long. Seeds are approximately 7 mm long, 5.5 mm wide, and 3 mm thick.
