This bamboo is native to Hunan, China, where it grows in open forests at elevations of approximately 600 meters. It has since been introduced to various regions, including the conterminous 48 United States, China's South-Central and Southeast regions, Colombia, Cuba, Florida, North Carolina, Puerto Rico, and South Carolina.
