Mentha japonica is a plant species in the Lamiaceae family, native to Hokkaido and Honshu in Japan. It was first described as Micromeria japonica by Friedrich Anton Wilhelm Miquel and later transferred to the Mentha genus by Tomitaro Makino in 1906. This species is listed as Near Threatened by the Japanese Ministry of Environment.
Description
Mentha japonica is a member of the Lamiaceae family and is found only in Japan, specifically on the islands of Hokkaido and Honshu. It was initially classified under the genus Micromeria by Friedrich Anton Wilhelm Miquel, but in 1906, Tomitaro Makino reclassified it into the Mentha genus. Due to its limited distribution and conservation concerns, it is considered a Near Threatened species by the Japanese Ministry of Environment.
