Melasma scabrum is a plant species in the family Orobanchaceae, native to regions including the Cape Provinces, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Lesotho, Northern Provinces, Swaziland, and Zimbabwe. It was first described by P.J. Bergius in 1767. A discussion in botanical literature suggests that an unspecified Burman specimen may serve as the type specimen for this species.

Description

Melasma scabrum belongs to the genus Melasma and is part of the Orobanchaceae family, commonly known as the broomrape family. Its distribution spans several regions in southern Africa, including the Cape Provinces, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Lesotho, Northern Provinces, Swaziland, and Zimbabwe. The species was first published by P.J. Bergius in 1767. A note in botanical literature, specifically in Chapter 7 of a work on Linnaean plant names, references a discussion by Wijnands (1992) in the Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, indicating that an unspecified Burman specimen may be considered the type for this species.
