Betula medwediewii Regel
Betula medwediewii, also known as Medwediew's Birch, is a decaploid species native to Turkey, Georgia, and Iran. It belongs to the Betulaceae family and is closely related to the diploid species Betula humilis and possibly Betula lenta. The species is classified in section Lentae, subgenus Aspera. A cultivar, 'Gold Bark,' has received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
Description
Betula medwediewii is a species of birch that is native to the Transcaucasian region, including Turkey, Georgia, and Iran. It is a decaploid, with its closest diploid relatives being Betula humilis and potentially Betula lenta from eastern North America. The species is part of section Lentae within the subgenus Aspera. The cultivar 'Gold Bark' has been recognized for its horticultural value and has earned the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. The species was first described by Regel in 1887.
